Today I was able to begin making paper clay hemispheres which will eventually hopefully create hanging balls to make up a Newton’s cradle sculpture. I’d love to be able to fit it with lights but think that might be a leap too far with the time left. I refined the final ratios of the slime maché, which is a combination of corn starch slime, sand and paper pulp.

Recipe - corn slime - 1200ml water per 500g corn flour, stir until dissolved and microwave for 3 minutes on high stopping every 30 seconds to stir so lumps or a skin dont form. Over the stove heat the mixture on medium stirring constantly until it reach a thick bouncy consistency.

Slime Maché recipe - 500g corn starch slime

50g dry paper pulp

250g Sans

ratio 10:5:1 slime, paper, sand.

combine the slime and the sand and then mix in the paper pulp until fully combined (approx 10 minutes of ramming and kneading) Wear a mask when using paper pulp as dust is created. Wet pulp distorts the colours of the paper, as you can see here this grey paper has bled and become an off pinky colour so dry pulp must be used.

I was able to prepare my corn flour composite in bulk at home, and so making up the blue paper clay today was easy and really relaxing. I was also able to use my dehumidifier to make two half’s in a day. Here’s a quick video of me mixing the perfect ratio of sand paper and corn starch and sculpting onto the mould. 

I’ve also attempted to hanging them in order to join the two peices, and considering how i’ll hang them so they can be swung around and played with.

I think I’ve done the hanging points a little wide here so will adjust this, but overall happy and excited to be working with the paper ‘slime-mache’ as this is definitely the most soothing of the materials I am using.
