Mirror Polishing

Wed 18th August

Today I worked on my mirror design, using the plasma cutter to create the shapes I’d worked on the day before. We were able to get my design cut by hacking the cutter and sorting it part way which was nerve wracking and exciting. I was then able to file it down and test out the sample legs I’d had lazer cut the day before. It was satisfying seeing it work and rock successfully. I’d been worried about the weight of the mirror, but ergonomically it felt like a success. I wasn’t as pleased visually, realising the combination of legs and slots felt a bit more complicated and detailed than id have liked. Im going to consider how I make it look more elegant when I get the final legs cut next week. I offered up some of the tubing which I think maybe feels nicer.

This afternoon I worked on trying to turn the aluminium into mirror finish though using different grades of sand paper. It was beginning to work which was satisfying, but I needed a higher powered tool which I’m going to use tomorrow.

I spent a lot of time arranging and rearranging my objects to help me with decision making/ decision anxiety. I want the colours and heights to be balanced and ‘feel right’, as well as each individual peice to look good alone and feel like a enjoyable designed object. Sometimes it feels like there’s a fine line between what I love and what I hate and so tweaking and arranging my objects can be useful in helping me get an overview of where I’m at, but it can waste time and heighten anxiety too which I need to watch out for.
